INTERVIEW WITH CHARLIE ALBONE OF SELLING HOUSES AUSTRALIA

INTERVIEW WITH
CHARLIE ALBONE,
SELLING HOUSES AUSTRALIA

INTERVIEW

IF YOU ARE like me you may be hooked on lifestyle television. Are you? One of the shows I watch often is Selling Houses Australia and I always admire Charlie Albone's calm when dealing with small budgets and a large project. I recently had the opportunity to interview Charlie and to share with you one of his recent projects outside of the show.

Charlie and his stylist wife Juliet Love have teamed up with Mirvac create their ultimate outdoor space this autumn and the images here are of the space they created. I asked Charlie to share some of his tips for creating an inviting outdoor space:

What elements do you think are essential to creating an outdoor space for this season and what are some considerations when dealing with a small space or garden?

It is really important to zone your areas so the space can be multi-functional. Balcony living can support a dining and lounge area. Just ensure you tie the areas together with some complementary furniture to make it look designed as one rather than a mismatch of styles.

In 'Selling Houses Australia', you often create great outdoor spaces with a limited budget. Can you suggest some tips for cost-conscious home owners trying to spruce up their outdoor space?

The best way to make your dollar go further is to do as much DIY as possible, for example a Greenwall costs $1200 a square meter installed by a professional and a DIY kit costs only half of that. Pick one piece of furniture that can be a hero piece that you spend a bit more on, looking for the best quality and then make up the rest of your pieces with the budget in mind.
What outdoor trends do you think are currently strong?

Vibrant colours and textures are great in small spaces and across the board. Spaces that are personal and intimate are growing and moving away from simply practical gardens.

What is your proudest project or most memorable project to date?

The Mirvac Live Outside the Box project has been a great experience that I had the opportunity to be a part of alongside my wife Juliet and up next I will be exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show 2015 with a large show garden.
