Yesterday I visited Mokum to view their fabric collections and I quickly fell in love with their designs which, as announced only recently, will also feature in the upcoming movie The Great Gatsby!
This pinwheel design which is a classic Mokum pattern has been used to cover a boat in the movie and Mokum have worked closely with Catherine Martin to produce new fabrics.
The Sydney showroom in the heart of Rushcutters Bay is lovely too, with furniture covered in their designs so that you can see large scale versions. Mokum is open to trade only so you'll need to visit with a professional in the industry if you would like to purchase fabric for your home.
What I found most inspiring was being given a peek into the creative process and the work that goes behind creating a design from the initial concept through to the final product and the workmanship involved in ensuring the products are suitable for Australia and New Zealand. The summer sun can bleach fabrics and turn silk into dust so careful consideration is required for our climate.
The photograph above shows the development of this fabric design from the original peacock inspiration (bottom left) to the simplified repeat design (top left) through to the final fabric in gold thread on black fabric.
And there was a chair in the store covered in this delicious fabric.
Also displayed were Mokum's indoor/outdoor range of fabrics (example above) which are made of recycled plastic bottles but feel almost as soft as cotton. Mokum is also working with another company on a new range of indoor/outdoor fabrics that are made from the tape of old cassettes (remember those??) and are sheer and soft and don't look or feel like plastic. Clever idea, don't you think?
